Transformers are the hub of power grids and the heart of the power system.
This common "iron lump" seen everywhere on power poles has become a highly sought-after hard currency in current global trade.
The explosive growth of global AI computing power has led to a power shortage. Coupled with the aging power grids in Europe and America, the power systems are in urgent need of large-scale renewal, triggering a concentrated surge in demand for transformers.
Moreover, regions with larger clusters of AI data centers face a more severe shortage of transformers.
Just how scarce are they?
Take North America as an example. Home to the computing clusters of tech giants including Microsoft, Google and Meta, it boasts the world’s highest computing power density, with a transformer shortage expected to reach as high as 30%. Currently, the global AI computing power track is fiercely competitive, with all players racing against time to seize market advantages.
Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East are also mired in the "transformer shortage". According to Citi’s forecasts, the global shortage of power transformers will last until at least 2029.
The global buying spree for transformers is still ongoing. It is these transformers that underpin the power lifeline of global AI computing power.
